RESUMO Modelos alométricos que definem o relacionamento entre diâmetro do tronco e a altura total da árvore na bacia amazônica são importantes porque refinam as estimativas de fluxo e estoques de carbono arbóreo na região. Este estudo testou diferentes modelos alométricos para estimar a altura total de árvores a partir do diâmetro do tronco em uma zona de ecótono entre florestas ombrófilas e sazonais no estado de Roraima, norte da Amazônia. Diâmetro do tronco e altura total foram medidos de forma direta em 65 árvores tombadas recentemente (vivas e mortas). Regressões linear e não-linear foram testadas para representar a relação D:H nesta zona específica de ecótono. Os critérios de seleção dos modelos foram o erro padrão da estimativa (Syx), o coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R²adj) e o Critério de Informação de Akaike (AIC). A análise dos resíduos dos modelos não-lineares mais parcimoniosos mostrou uma tendência de superestimar a altura total para árvores entre 20-40 cm de diâmetro do tronco. A aplicação do modelo melhor ajustado (Michaelis-Menten) indicou que equações gerais publicadas previamente para os trópicos que usam diâmetro como variável independente podem superestimar em 10-29% (modelos Weibull) ou subestimar em 8% (modelos baseados no clima) a altura das árvores na área de estudo. Nós concluímos que o modelo de melhor ajuste pode ser usado nas florestas ecotonais estudadas em Roraima, porque ele reflete realisticamente o relacionamento biométrico local entre diâmetro do tronco e altura total da árvore. É necessário expandir os estudos para outras áreas periféricas do norte da Amazônia, com o intuito de reduzir as incertezas em estimativas de biomassa e carbono arbóreo que adotem altura da árvore como uma variável em modelos gerais.

ABSTRACT Allometric models defining the relationship between stem diameter and total tree height in the Amazon basin are important because they refine the estimates of tree carbon stocks and flow in the region. This study tests different allometric models to estimate the total tree height from the stem diameter in an ecotone zone between ombrophilous and seasonal forests in the Brazilian state of Roraima, in northern Amazonia. Stem diameter and total height were measured directly in 65 recently fallen trees (live or dead). Linear and nonlinear regressions were tested to represent the D:H relation in this specific ecotone zone. Criteria for model selection were the standard error of the estimate (Syx) and the adjusted coefficient of determination (R²adj), complemented by the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). Analysis of residuals of the most parsimonious nonlinear models showed a tendency to overestimate the total tree height for trees in the 20-40 cm diameter range. Application of our best fitted model (Michaelis-Menten) indicated that previously published general equations for the tropics that use diameter as the independent variable can either overestimate tree height in the study area by 10-29% (Weibull models) or underestimate it by 8% (climate-based models). We concluded that our site-specific model can be used in the ecotone forests studied in Roraima because it realistically reflects the local biometric relationships between stem diameter and total tree height. Studies need to be expanded in peripheral areas of northern Amazonia in order to reduce uncertainties in biomass and carbon estimates that use the tree height as a variable in general models.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to compare the spatial and the height distribution of three plant species between two rupestrian field communities, one preserved (A) and the other cultivated (B). One 50 × 100 m plot was delimited in each community and the populations of Eremanthus incanus, Lychnophora pinaster and Vellozia caruncularis were assessed for height and spatial distribution (using the Ripleys’s L-function). In community A, 4,098 individuals were counted, mostly L. pinaster, against 220 individuals in community B, prevailing E. incanus. An inverted-J pattern was observed for height distribution in both communities, however, with lower frequencies in B. Regular spatial distribution was found for E. incanus and V. caruncularis in community A, whereas the pattern for L. pinaster depended on the scale of analysis. The spatial distribution of all species differed between communities. The Ecological Park Quedas do Rio Bonito contributes to the conservation of these rupestrian field species.

Neste estudo, objetivou-se a avaliação da dinâmica estrutural de uma comunidade arbórea, com históricos de incêndios, em uma floresta estacional semidecidual altimontana, entre os anos de 2002 e 2008, na Serra da Mantiqueira. Foram calculadas taxas de dinâmica em função do número de indivíduos sobreviventes, recrutas e mortos e, taxas de dinâmica relativas ao ganho e perda de área basal. Foi verificado se existem diferenças espaciais entre as taxas ao longo de gradiente vegetacional paralelo à elevação do terreno e se há correlações entre as taxas de dinâmicas com as variáveis bióticas (número inicial de indivíduos, área basal inicial) e abiótica (cota altimétrica). Foram encontradas taxas de recrutamento superiores às taxas de mortalidade, havendo também maiores taxas de ganho em relação à perda em área basal. Esse resultado indica que a floresta se encontra em expansão, com ganho em números de indivíduos e em área basal. Quando a comunidade foi analisada em setores (base, meio e topo da encosta), verificou-se que não houve diferenças entre as taxas de dinâmicas para os setores. De maneira geral, obtiveram-se poucas correlações significativas entre as variáveis bióticas e abióticas e as taxas de dinâmicas. O ganho em número de indivíduos e área basal, a não diferenciação das taxas de dinâmica entre os setores e as baixas correlações entre as variáveis com dinâmica da estrutura da floresta são evidências que eventos históricos, como incêndio ocorrido na década de 90, podem estar afetando diretamente as taxas de dinâmica da floresta como um todo.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the structural dynamic rates of an shrubs-tree component of a seasonal semideciduous upper montane forest, in Mantiqueira Mountain between 2002 and 2008. We calculated the rates of dynamic according to the number of surviving, dead individuals and recruits, as well as the rates of dynamic for gain and loss of basal area. We verified the spatial differences among the rates along the vegetation gradient parallel to ground elevation. We also studied the correlations between the rates and biotic (initial numbers of trees and initial basal area) and abiotic parameters (altimetric quota). We verified that recruitment was higher than mortality, and the gain of basal area was higher than the loses. This result suggests that the forest is expanding, with gain in number of individuals and in basal area. Normally, this result characterizes forests in recuperation after some disturbance. The community sectors (basis, middle and top of hillside) didn't show any differences in terms of dynamic rates. In general, there were few significant correlations between biotic and abiotic parameters and the dynamic rates. The increase of density and basal area, the similarity of dynamic rates among the sectors and the low correlation between parameters and the dynamic of forest's structure point out that the forest burning occurred in 90's could be, nowadays, interfering directly in dynamic rates of forest.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to study the phyto-sociological structure of a shrub and tree vegetation colonization in an abandoned stand of Eucalyptus spp. in Lavras, MG, Brazil, in order to identify the existence of species groups, vegetation gradients, and Alpha diversity. The phytosociological sampling collected 5 transects of various sizes with 100 equidistant points (14 m), using the quadrant method. The assessment included all individuals with breast diameter ≥5 cm. There were a total of 854.28 sampled individuals/ha, belonging to 91 species, distributed into 67 genera and 31 families. The highest VI values were obtained for Piptadenia gonoacantha, Copaifera langsdorffii, Tapirira guianensis and Ocotea corymbosa. The analysis of trunk diameter distribution showed that the community was in a stage of full regeneration with individuals distributed over all diameter classes. Most species presented syndromes of seed dispersal by animals and regeneration guilds of pioneer and climax demanding light. Perhaps planting may have served as shelter and refuge for fauna species in the region and mortality of individuals of Eucalyptus spp. resulted in gaps of different sizes. Vegetation was identified along a gradient, with a gradual change in evenness between the four groups of species characterized by cluster analysis. The indices of diversity (H’ = 3.58) and evenness (J = 0.794) of the species were similar to those found in other phyto-sociological studies of Eucaliptus spp platations. Furthermore, the tree planting functioned as a catalyst for natural regeneration in the study area.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo conhecer a estrutura fitossociológica da vegetação arbustivoarbórea colonizadora em um plantio, abandonado há 50 anos, de Eucalyptus spp., no Município de Lavras, MG, visando diagnosticar a existência de grupos de espécies, de gradientes vegetacionais e a diversidade alpha. A amostragem fitossociológica, realizada pelo método dos quadrantes, contou com 100 pontos, distribuídos em seis transecções de comprimentos variáveis. Estiveram passíveis de inclusão todos os indivíduos com diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) (≥5 cm). O levantamento resultou em uma densidade de 854,28 indivíduos/ha, com 91 espécies, distribuídas em 67 gêneros e 31 famílias. Destacaram-se, em valor de importância, Piptadenia gonoacantha, Copaifera langsdorffii, Tapirira guianensis e Ocotea corymbosa. A análise da distribuição dos indivíduos em classes de diâmetro revelou uma comunidade em plena regeneração. A maioria das espécies apresentou síndromes de dispersão zoocórica, sugerindo que o plantio pode ter servido de abrigo e refúgio para espécies da fauna dispersora presente na região. As guildas de regeneração mais frequentes foram as de pioneiras e clímax exigentes de luz, possivelmente em função da mortalidade de indivíduos de Eucalyptus spp., que ocasionou clareiras de diferentes tamanhos. Foi diagnosticado um gradiente vegetacional longo, com uma mudança gradativa na equabilidade entre os quatro grupos de espécies caracterizados pela análise de agrupamento. Os índices de diversidade (H’ = 3,58) e equabilidade (J = 0,794) de espécies foram semelhantes aos encontrados em outros levantamentos fitossociológicos, em plantios de Eucaliptus spp.. Dessa forma, o plantio funcionou como um catalisador da regeneração natural na área de estudo.
